2nd Lieut of Artillery, 1st Lieut of Cavalry, Capt of Infantry
Major of  Artillery, Lt Col of Staff, Col of Infantry
* Any officer who wasn't Artillery, Cavalry, or Infantry was considered a Staff Officer.
The uniform differed only in colored trim, trouser stripe, or sash and hat badge.

Generals
* Brigadier Generals commanded brigades, Major Generals divisions and larger units.
Lieutenant General Winfield Scott retired in 1861.  That grade went unfilled until
Ulysses Grant was appointed by Congress in March 1864.
